Welcome

Accessible Arts & Media (AAM) was formed through the merger of two well established York based charities, Accessible Arts and Cube Media in 2008. We are a community, arts and media provision based in York whose primary aim is to create accessible and inclusive opportunities for young people and people with disabilities to participate in high quality and affordable activities.

Accessible Arts and Media (AAM) is a charity connecting local communities, people with disabilities and young people across York & North Yorkshire. Running creative music and arts projects where the achievements and aspirations of everyone are celebrated regardless of their circumstances.

Accessible Arts & Media (AAM) is York’s award winning arts and media charity that inspires thousands of disabled people and young people to communicate through creativity, have their voices heard and to make a real difference in their communities and beyond. Our projects include:

  • Hands & Voices – one of the UK’s first singing and signing choirs that enables those with communication difficulties to express themselves more easily.

  • www.ablewebyork.org and www.ablewebradio.org - two pioneering online media projects run by local disabled people for local disabled people where information, positive activities and services are presented in an accessible format.

  • Inclusive Music Projects (IMPs) York and East Riding is a unique opportunity for young people to work together as equals and celebrate abilities by learning to sing and sign and compose and perform their own music.

  • A specialist sensory programme designed to meet the needs of adults and children with profound and multiple disabilities to develop communication, interaction, motor and learning skills.

AAM are pleased to announce that we have been awarded The Duke of York's Community Initiative Award which reflects the excellent work we have been doing in the community for 30 years.

    Alan Hacker
Sadly our inspirational Patron, Alan Hacker OBE, the internationally renowed clarinettist, conductor and teacher died on the 16th April 2012. Alan made a huge difference to AAM and all our members in the 20 years he was our Patron.

He was a truly remarkable man who made such a difference to AAM and all our members in the 20 years he was our Patron.

“As a disabled person himself, Alan understood only too well the difficulties of living and coping day-to-day with a disability – inspiring everyone not to accept second best. Alan never ceased to amaze me and everyone at AAM with the passion, dedication and concern he had for us - always taking time to get to know our members individually and where ever possible helping to nurture their musical talents. This is what we will treasure and remember him for always. Thank you so much Alan!” Rose Kent - Director, AAM
You can listen to some of Alan's music right here on our website. Please visit the Samples of our Work page.
