Sensory Programme
AA&M's new sensory programme has been developed in partnership with the City of York Council in response to ‘Valuing People Now’ and personalisation, whereby individuals are being funded directly for the first time allowing disabled people to be in control of their own lives. Each session is structured so that participants have an opportunity to explore and express themselves and communicate through creative activities, by working alongside their carer/support worker.
Sensory Drop-In
The sensory drop-in is a unique session, where clients can drop in with their support workers and try out a range of multi sensory and musical activities. As opposed to a traditional workshop setting, these sessions have a much more flexible structure, allowing the individual client and their support worker the opportunity to work together to explore the environment, and find activities they both enjoy - and through the experience have fun and develop their relationship. The activities in the sensory drop in include:
- MIDIcreator (by pressing a switch you can hear a sound)
- Soundbeam (by moving in front of the beam you can play music and trigger images)
- Apollo Ensemble (lets you use switches and sensors to transform body movements into sound, light, image and video).
- G Force (by making a sound into the microphone you can change pictures)
- Photo Booth (Enables you to take pictues and manipulate them on a Mac)
- Vibroacoustic Soundbox/ beanbag (by sitting/ lying on the box or beanbag you can feel the vibrations of music through your body)
Such a wide selection of stimuli ensures that there will always be something to suit everyone - there are chillout areas, but also interactive areas; areas where people can work together, but also areas where they can be by themselves. The sensory drop in offers a completely unique combination of visual, auditory, tactile and vibroacoustic stimuli, which means that people can benefit from the experience whatever their interests, abilities or needs.
The sessions take place each Friday at Burton Stone Community Centre. As with the other 3 sensory activities, referrals must come from care managers. Contact us for more information.
