SoundWeavers

The SoundWeavers are a small group of disabled composers and apprentice workshop leaders, who use accessible forms of music technology and other sensory and interactive technologies, ranging from specifically designed assistive technology such as
MIDIcreator and Soundbeam, to mainstream music
software such as Soundforge and Cubase.

Every term the group members choose a theme to work on – in the past these have included a reggae song, a soundscape of York and unique interactive performance at the Treasurer’s house in York based on some of York’s most famous ghost stories. At the moment, the group is working on their own cover of ‘I heard it through the grapevine’ and they have recently taken on a new role as sound engineers/composers for Hands & Voices.

As well as giving regular performances, the SoundWeavers take on commissions and compose music for shows and installations. Members of the group have also been trained through our Apprentice Workshop Leader Programme, where they learn to demonstrate accessible technologies and run workshops, like members of Hands & Voices.

The SoundWeavers also offer a consultancy service. If there is a piece of music technology you have that you don’t know how to use, or if you’re unsure what equipment to buy for your group, then please get in touch with us.

The group meets each Wednesday evening from 7.30pm – 9.30pm at Burton Stone Community Centre during term time and costs £3 per week.
